Some really fresh photography by Alex Prager. The color correction and retouching make these images feel like Kodachrome – and it helps that the styling and models have the look from that same era too. Check out Alex Prager’s portfolio.
After having looked at every single photograph in Laurie Bartley’s portfolio I was left speechless. I am constantly surfing the web looking for new fashion photographers, or at least new to me, looking for inspiration. Laurie is able to take a natural looking scene, for instance like the featured photograph above taken place at a grocery store, and make it look so much cooler then what it is.
There is a cinematic quality to the photographs that feels like each photo is a still from a movie. Bartley has the ability to light a scene so naturally that the ambience is not lost but the subject still pops out of the scene. Brilliant work. Check out: http://www.lauriebartley.com/
I cannot wait until Mad Men season 3 comes out to DVD – they’ve been sitting in my Netflix queue now for a few weeks. Speaking of Mad Men I’d like to share with you the photography work of Andy Ryan.
I cannot for the life of me remember how I stumbled across his beautiful work but his work with the cast of Mad Men is amazing! The shot pictured above is one of my favorites of the series.
Andy has a pretty diverse portfolio ranging from celebrities, fashion to portraits all which shows a unique lighting style and strengths. Check it out: Andy Ryan Photography.
I admit I’m a huge fan of Annie Leibovitz work, especially her advertising work for Louis Vuitton. Even though she may be the easiest photographer to like and not so ‘underground’, ‘hip’ or ‘up and coming’, but I think she tells a great story with a photograph and I appreciate that.
Recently she shot the Spring 2010 ad campaign for Vuitton that depicts herself, for the first time in an ad piece, along with Mikhail Baryshnikov. I’ve always loved her sets that show a ‘behind the scenes’ look, showing her lighting equipment, props and backdrop, but I’m not sure how I feel about herself in the photo. Maybe it’s her pose or something? I don’t know. Thoughts?

One cannot have enough blogs these days. So to separate my personal blog with my photography I’ve created a new blog that I will attempt to give a behind-the-scenes, if you will, look at my photo shoots. I know of other photographers who have done this and I love being able to see what’s behind the curtain.
The new photography blog is located here: http://kansascityphotography.blogspot.com. Real original, right? Well I think it’s relevant to where I’m shooting at and I’m trying to make a name for myself here in Kansas City so I felt it was appropriate.
Anyhow I hope to include lighting information, location information and other interesting tid bits from the shoot. Enjoy!

So I’ve been reading a crap ton of blogs lately and I thought I’d share them. Usually I read/look at them just for photographic inspiration, fashion trends and other things that are cool.
Enjoy. Bookmark. Read. Daily.
Finally launched my own website for my photography. My website features me as a photographer for fashion, beauty and portrait. Take a look… http://www.ryanstrong.net – Ryan Strong Photography – Kansas City.
Dave Hill, commercial photographer and creative retoucher, just updated his website and added new photos to his portfolio. Dave Hill is known for his creative retouching abilities to take a photograph (sometimes multiple photographs) and create a work of art.
His retouching recipe is mysterious and some people would give their left foot to know how he achieves his “look”. There are loads of forum threads and tutorials on trying to achieve the “Dave Hill Look”. Take for example this crazy Dave Hill Look thread at Retouch Pro that has over 200,000 views and 2,000 posts.
While most photographers, retouchers and creatives alike have come to be jaded over this specific look, I feel Dave Hill’s new work has progressed and continues to master his craft. He isn’t a ‘one trick pony’ he’s an artist and great photographer.
Check out his new work and also be sure to watch his behind the scenes videos as they give a little insight to how he sets the scene: Dave Hill Photo – http://www.davehillphoto.com/

Lately I’ve been obsessing over these few photographs taken by Annie Leibovitz for Vannity Fair’s 2009 Hollywood Portfolio. There’s a lot of drama with the poses and its very compelling how she can capture an interesting shot just on a grey backdrop.
I also really dig the retouching. Seems like a interesting use of localized Shadow/Highlight process in Photoshop. From the behind the scenes video provided with this shoot it shows Annie using her staple light modifier the Softlighter II – which I just went out and purchased! I’m really pumped to go out and use it.
